Mobile autonomous robot systems and adaptive systems

The Mobile Robotics Research Group at the Institute for Business Cybernetics (IfU) e.V. focuses on the autonomy and navigation of mobile robot systems in partially and unstructured environments, as well as on adaptive stationary robots. The research topics include state estimation of mobile systems based on heterogeneous sensor data, environment mapping and localization in highly dynamic, partially and unstructured environments, mobile manipulation, as well as the application and further development of machine learning methods in the context of mobile and stationary robot systems (image segmentation & robotic learning of, for example, (dis)assembly skills). The research group works on application-oriented research and industry projects with numerous industry partners.

Current Research Projects: At the end of this year and beginning of 2026, several new publicly funded research projects will be launched with a focus on intelligent and energy-efficient robot systems. In the 3DCeraTex project, a 3D braiding system for fiber-reinforced ceramic composite components is being developed in cooperation with APS gGmbH. The OREO project deals with data-driven energy modeling and optimization of industrial robots to increase energy efficiency in ongoing production lines. Another project is developing heavy-duty quadrupedal robot systems with machine learning-based control technology for use in unstructured environments. The IntelliDrape project is dedicated to graph-based sequence planning for the automated draping of fiber-reinforced plastics using classical and learning-based methods.

We are looking for research assistants to support our team in the above-mentioned research projects as soon as possible (by February 1, 2026, at the latest).

We offer:

  • Deepening of technical skills in application-oriented research with a focus on robotics and deep reinforcement learning
  • Collaboration in a highly motivated, agile, and interdisciplinary team
  • Freedom to shape your work and consideration of individual interests for personal development and refinement of the desired research content
  • Collaboration in the development and testing of real prototypes and demonstrators
  • Remuneration in accordance with EG 13 TV-L

  • Very good German and English language skills
  • Good programming skills in Python and/or C++
  • Knowledge of the Robot Operating System (ROS) and Linux (Ubuntu) (optional)
  • Strong knowledge in one or more of the following areas: robotics, automation technology, control engineering, machine learning
  • Experience with simulation-based development environments (e.g., NVIDIA Isaac Sim) (optional)
  • High degree of independence, commitment, initiative, and resilience
  • Very good analytical and conceptual skills as well as a structured way of working
  • Strong team orientation and communication skills

Your Tasks:

  • Conceptualization, research, and testing of methods and concepts in the context of autonomous mobile and stationary robot systems for various areas of application
  • Development of prototype robot systems in various areas of application
